The Abaia is a giant eel located at the bottom of freshwater lakes in the Fiji, Solomon and Vanuatu Islands. Abaia are a strange eel. They consider all the inhabitants of the lake they reside in to be their children, despite the fact that eels are primarily carnivores.
Abaia are fiercely protective of their lakes. It is said that fishermen who disturb the watery home of an Abaia will be quickly engulfed by a huge wave. Other stories say that if anyone harms a resident of an Abaia’s lake, the eel will cause a tremendous storm and flood the land.
